Overview
Brass Tommy Bar Radiator Key
The Brass Tommy Bar Radiator Key is an essential hand tool for both heating engineers and homeowners. Unlike standard "clock" style keys, the tommy bar design provides significantly more leverage, making it the preferred choice for venting (bleeding) air from radiator valves that have become stiff or painted over.
Key Technical Specifications
Material: Solid Brass for high durability and rust resistance.
Socket Size: Standard 5mm (approximately 3/16") square socket, compatible with the vast majority of UK radiator bleed valves.
Design: Features a sliding or fixed cross-bar (tommy bar) to allow for a firm grip and high rotational torque.
Durability: The brass construction is softer than the steel bleed screw, which helps prevent "rounding off" the valve head during use.
Why the Tommy Bar Design is Superior
Increased Torque: The extended bar allows you to apply force more easily than a small plastic or stamped-metal key.
Grip: Easier to use for those with limited hand strength or when wearing gloves.
Reliability: Unlike cheap zinc-alloy keys, solid brass keys are less likely to snap when dealing with seized valves.
Venting (Bleeding) Best Practices
Turn Off Heating: Always turn off the central heating pump before bleeding radiators to prevent more air from being drawn into the system.
Locate the Valve: The bleed valve is typically found at the top corner of the radiator.
Prepare for Water: Place a cloth or small container under the valve.
Operate: Insert the tommy bar key and turn slowly anti-clockwise (usually a quarter to half turn) until you hear air hissing.
Close: As soon as a steady stream of water appears, turn the key clockwise to close the valve. Do not over-tighten, as this can damage the internal valve seat.
