AGA Troubleshooting: 4 Common Faults and How to Fix Them

An AGA is built like a tank, but even the most reliable icons need a little TLC from time to time. When your AGA starts acting up—whether it's losing heat or the burner won't light—knowing which part is the culprit can save you days of cold cooking.

At Woodford Bathrooms and Boilers, we supply the high-precision spares needed to get your cooker back to temperature. Here are four common troubleshooting scenarios and the parts you’ll need to solve them.

1. The Burner is "Spluttering" or Won't Stay Lit (Oil Models)

If your oil-fired AGA is struggling to maintain a flame or smells of unburnt fuel, the wick is often the first place to look. Over time, wicks become carbon-heavy and "choked," preventing a clean burn.

The Fix: A fresh wick set.

2. Uneven Oven Temperatures

Is your AGA running too hot or failing to reach the "Roasting" zone despite being on all day? This usually points to a failing thermostat. The thermostat is the "brain" that regulates the heat flow; when it loses calibration, your cooking results will suffer.

The Fix: Replace the internal thermostat.

3. Electric Control Issues (Flexotemp Models)

Modernized or electric-assist AGAs rely on electrical components to manage fuel flow and heat. If your electric top isn't responding or the fuel valve isn't opening correctly, the Toby Electric Top may have burnt out.

The Fix: Replace the 12V Electric Top.

4. Poor Heat Transfer or Unstable Burner

If you notice the burner isn't sitting level or the heat distribution feels "off" at the base of the unit, check the Carbon Leg. These components are vital for the structural integrity of the burner assembly within the cast iron housing.

The Fix: Inspect and replace worn burner legs.
